The AN/PEQ-2 is an infrared laser (visible only with Night Vision optics) and infrared illuminator. At night, you ideally want to have your NV head-mounted speq 2o that you can see wherever you are looking. This makes using iron sights and standard optics difficult or impossible, though, so instead, troops use the laser to aim with.
